“In case I haven’t told you before, your grandmother is lovely,” Caro said. “Do you think she is serious about her offer to take me to America with her?”

Evie dropped an earring and bent down to retrieve it at the same time as Caro reached for it. Their heads knocked together and they both sprung back.

Caro grimaced. “You have a hard head, milady.”

Evie rubbed her head. “I’m willing to bet yours is thicker than mine.”

“In future,” Caro said, “please assume I will bend down to pick up something you’ve dropped. Sometimes I wonder if you forget yourself.”

Evie smiled and asked, “Would you be happier if I take a whip to you?”

“I’m just saying.”

Evie slipped the earring into place. “Out of curiosity, are you likely to accept my granny’s offer?”

Caro tilted her head from side to side. “It’s nice to have choices. But it also complicates everything. I should accept an offer that is bound to improve my circumstances. If I don’t, I risk coming across as lacking ambition. What would you do if you received a proposal from a duke and another proposal from someone like Tom? Which one would you accept?”

Evie sat back and stared at Caro. “Did my granny put you up to it?”

Caro looked away. “She might have and I don’t blame her for wanting to know if you have ambitions to improve your life or if you are looking for something else. She happens to think you will once again settle for nothing less than love, but since you have been living here and have been exposed to English society, you might want to aspire to a grander title.”

Evie stood up and inspected her dress. “Caro, you are not to accept my granny’s offer of a job in America. I forbid it.”

“Very well, milady.” Caro smiled at her. “Next time, you might want to try a sterner tone.”

“Oh, and please don’t encourage my granny to think poor Mr. Gibbins was murdered.”

“So… which proposal would you accept?”

Millicent rushed into the room and had a whispered conversation with Caro.

“What’s wrong?” Evie asked.

“It’s Lady Sara. She has changed her mind about her dress and will be wearing blue.”

Evie looked at her reflection. “I am not changing out of my blue dress.”

“This one will do nicely.” Caro held a coral pink dress. “Come on.”

“This is such nonsense… That one has a million buttons.”

“Just as well you have a lady’s maid to do them all up. You’ll have to change your earrings too. I think the coral ones will look lovely. Or perhaps the pearls.”

A knock at the door had Evie grumbling. “I refuse to change my dress again.

A footman entered and delivered a note to Evie.

Evie read it twice and groaned.

“Milady? Is everything all right?”
